In the third quarter of 2026, sales from Temu, Shein and AliExpress in Germany fell by 35.5 per cent compared with the same period last year, making about 566 million euros. Their combined share of the German online market also fell from 5.3 per cent in the second quarter to a recent 3.1 per cent. One reason for this decline is, supposedly, that small parcels are now more expensive.
Since July, the 150-euro duty-free limit for goods imported into the EU has been removed. Shipments worth up to 150 euros now face a 3-euro fee per product group. From November, an additional 2-euro processing fee will apply. German trade associations are also calling for stricter market checks and better enforcement of existing rules.
Shein's profits are falling
Shein is especially under pressure. In the first half of 2026, its operating profit fell by around 53 per cent compared with the same period last year. Uncertain consumer spending, inflation, political tensions and changing shipping costs are impacting sales.
At the same time, German online retail is losing some momentum. Sales rose by 2.9 per cent in the third quarter, compared with just over 5 per cent in the previous quarter.
