Damaged electric vehicles can create new challenges for garages, especially when it comes to removing, storing and transporting high-voltage batteries. A new practical guide from the Federal Guild Association of the Motor Vehicle Trade (German abbr. BIV) explains how garages should handle these batteries safely and who is responsible for the costs.
Who carries the costs?
From 2025, new rules under the EU Battery Regulation and the German Battery Act apply. Removed used batteries must be handed over to battery retailers or authorised waste management companies. Retailers must take back the batteries free of charge, regardless of the brand, manufacturer or battery type.
For accident-damaged vehicles, the insurer responsible for the claim generally covers the costs until the battery is handed over. This includes recovery, removal, safe storage, securing and transport.
After handover, the manufacturer or take-back scheme covers the costs of transport and recycling.
Take-back is mandatory
Refusing a legally required take-back without good reason can result in a fine of up to €100,000. The BIV recommends that garages notify the responsible party in writing, set clear deadlines and keep detailed records of the process. The guide is aimed at garages, breakdown services and insurers and is designed to help them meet the legal requirements.
