The German Federal Association for Professional Conservation and Protection of Species is calling for a special provision for mercury-containing UV lamps to remain in place beyond 2027. More than 45 other organisations support this proposal. According to these organisations, specific UV lamps are critical for health and breeding, as well as species-appropriate care of many reptiles, amphibians, birds, and small mammals.
No proper substitute for mercury lamps
Apparently, as of now, latest replacement technologies do not provide the same performance for all needed applications. As a result, an immediate phase-out could seriously challenge animal welfare, husbandry, and conservation efforts. Until viable alternatives become available, the UV lamps in question are demanded to remain in place for as long as legally possible.
As the European Commission reviews the issue, affected organisations continue to advocate for a pragmatic transition that supports both environmental objectives and species protection.
