Preventing battery fires: Safe take-back matters more than ever

The German Ministry for the Environment is joining forces with retailers and the waste management sector to take action against battery fires. Plans include better take-back options, clearer consumer information and improved fire safety at workplaces.

Battery fires are becoming a serious problem for the waste management sector. Lithium-ion batteries that are disposed of incorrectly can cause fires. They put employees at risk, damage recycling plants and threaten the recycling system and the recovery of valuable raw materials.

Focus on take-back, training and consumer information

Producer organisations and the waste management sector want to work together on several campaigns. They aim to raise awareness of the risks of battery fires. A standard sticker for collection boxes in homes and businesses should also help consumers dispose of batteries correctly. In addition, the insurance industry is planning a seminar on fire safety at the workplace. It will focus on the VdS 2517 standard.

#LithiumUnites: Prevent fires today

The #LithiumUnites initiative also focuses on informing consumers. As part of the EAR campaign weeks “Every Plug Counts!” and beyond, producers and retailers can request an aid package containing information materials and guidelines on how to dispose of batteries safely.

Become part of #LithiumUnites today! Help ensure the safe disposal of old electrical devices, prevent fires and protect employees and recycling facilities. Request your aid package now and help make recycling safer!
